Park City

This week we took a vacation to Park City, Utah to do some Spring skiing. We invited Toshi and Nicole to join us since we rented a big condo. After a long flight out to Salt Lake City and a short drive from the airport, we made it to our house and unpacked. Sophia and you liked the place because it had stairs and you never get to play on stairs.

This is the view out the back. As you can see we were right next to the Deer Valley Ski Resort. We just had to walk a little ways to drop you off at daycare and then hit the slopes. We even had a private storage area so we did not have to lug our skis and boots back home with us at the end of the day.

Sophia was required to wear googles when she skiied. When we saw the pink goggles, we knew there would not be a fight since she love anything that is pink.

Mommy was very nice and let me hit the slopes the first day while you guys and Nicole went to pick up groceries. Instead of Deer Valley, we hit the Park City Resort because Deer Valley does not allow snowboarders on their slopes (woohoo!) and Toshi only boards. It was a little gray outside, but free skiing for half a day is a nice way to warm up the muscles.

The next morning we hit Deer Valley. Since you still do not have a lot of hair, you always need to wear a hat and everyone loves this funny hat.

First we dropped Sophia and you off at day care. It was a nice day care and I think you both enjoyed your time there.

Look how tall Sophia has grown - 39 inches!

Freedom at last. We rarely get a whole day of leisure away from the two of you so we were very excited.

Here is a shot while we went up the chairlift. The whole ski park was really that empty. We never waited at a chairlift and had most of the entire hill to ourselves while we skied down.

Another shot. Is anyone else skiing today?

After skiing we drove to Main Street which is about 1 mile from the condo where all the Sundance Film Festival is held and the bars and restaurants are located. Here we are at Robert Redford's restaurant Zoom. It was pretty good as were all of the restaurants.

For some reason, Mommy brought the DVD player for Sophia which kept her preoccupied for hours. However, you kept us busy (and entertained) thoughout the dinner.

The next day we hit Deer Valley again. Check out this view. Both Mommy and Daddy got to try out their new Patagonia shells which were excellent! Doesn't Mommy look happy!

And another shot. You could see for miles and miles.

At the end of the day we would relax outside the chalet before picking up the two of you.

Now what did you do in daycare? Well for most of the time, Sophia played inside on the indoor playgym, did art projects, or ate lots of snacks (including Oreos!). But for 1 hour in the morning Sophia went outside for private ski lessons. We could not help ourselves and kept checking out the bunny hill to see if Sophia was out having her lessons. Once we saw her pink ski jacket and red helmet, we headed over with our cameras. It was like paparazzi.

We were not sure if Sophia would like to ski or not, but it seems like she enjoyed it and was able to stand up on her skis, go down the hill in a 'wedge' or 'pizza' stance, stop by using a snow-plow move, and do some basic turns.

Sophia's teachers would ski backwards in front of her to make sure she did not go flying down the hill. She had some trouble because her legs are not quite strong enough to control the skis well, but she did very well. I think next year she will really be able to improve.

Here's a nice shot of Sophia's good wedge form.

On the first day, Sophia went on the 'magic carpet' which was a conveyor belt to take her up a very short bunny hill. On the last day, she advanced enough that they took her up a real chairlift. She had to be lifted onto it and off it because she was too short. Here it the large bunny hill she skied down called Wide West. On our last day, Mommy tried taking Sophia on the last day but she was not cooperating - ski lessons are the way to go.

Of course inside the daycare center,Sophia was up to her usual craziness.

And you were up to your usual eating everything.

Towards the end of our stay we drove to Sundance which is Robert Redford's resort. It has a small ski area, a lodge, and a nice lunch buffet. It's called Sundance because Robert Redford starred in a movie called Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Robert Redford played the Sundance Kid

They had an old cowboy general store and Sophia spotted pink lollipops. Mommy bribed you with them to be good at lunch. Here is Mommy and Sophia picking one out.

Here is a picture of Robert Redford and Paul Newman from the movie and what I presume is a saddle from his horse in the movie.

One more picture outside the resort. Hey where are YOU? You were in daycare for the full day - too bad you missed out on the Sundance trip.

Leaving Park City was not so easy. There was heavy snowfall the next morning and we missed our flight. We ended up waiting 6 hours at the airport for the next flight and then had a 5 hour flight back to NY. That was a long, long day. But we all had a good time.

Here are some videos.
